Jurisdictions of the Court
Circuit Courts hear felonies, some misdemeanors and lesser-included offenses. This kind of court will hear general civil claims for more than $5000 and civil equity claims. Circuit Courts will also hear juvenile, domestic relations, probate and mental health cases; these courts will hear guardianships, divorce, child abuse and neglect, civil commitments, and the administration of estates.
District Courts will hear misdemeanors and preliminary hearings for all types of criminal cases. Additionally, there are Small Claims divisions within each District Court for most general civil claims for less than $5000.
City Courts will hear misdemeanor criminal cases and felony preliminary hearings.
