Jurisdictions of the Court
Superior Courts will handle real property, equity, domestic relations as well as felonies and lesser offenses.
State Courts will hear misdemeanor criminal cases and traffic offenses.
Magistrate Courts will handle cases like preliminary hearings, some minor criminal offenses, county ordinance violations, most general civil claims with less than $15,000 in dispute, landlord-tenant cases and bad check cases.
Juvenile Courts will handle cases involving alleged law-breaking children or those in need of treatment due to mental illness or “mental retardation.”
Probate Courts will handle all court cases that deal with the probate of wills, the administration of estates, guardianships of minors or “incompetent” persons, and other types of probate cases.
Municipal Courts will handle limited municipal ordinance violations and preliminary hearings for certain criminal cases.
Civil Courts will deal with civil cases involving less than $25,000 in dispute and may offer jury trials. This court may also deal with minor criminal offenses.
