Butte County, California Property Records
One of the original 27 counties of California, Butte County was formed on February 18, 1850. Butte County was sectioned off to from parts of the following counties: Colusa County, Glenn County, Lassen County, Plumas County, Shasta County, Sierra County, Sutter County and Tehama County. The name comes from the Marysville or Sutter Buttes, which lies in Butte County. “Butte” means “a small hill or mound of earth detached from any mountain range.” Oroville is the county seat. Adjacent counties are Yuba County to the south, Sutter County to the south, Colusa County to the southwest, Glenn County to the west, Tehama County to the north and Plumas County to the east. Heavily populated cities in Butte County include: Biggs, Chico, Gridley, Oroville and Paradise.
According to the 2009 United States Census, Butte County had 220,577 residents, compared with California’s total population of 36,961,664. Butte County saw an increase in population by 8.6% from 2000 to 2009. There were 96,191 housing units in 2009, and the 2000 homeownership rate was 60.7%. The median value of owner-occupied housing units was $129,800 in 2000. The number of persons living below the poverty level was 20.7% in 2008. The median household income in 2008 was $40,308. The per capita money income for 1999 was $17,517.
